Limitations
The virtual cutter has been designed to work with the Microsoft Windows operation system and the web browsers Internet Explorer, Netscape and Firefox. Unfortunatey the operation of the Virtual Cutter cannot be guaranteed in all cases. This is caused by the incompatibility of the web browsers and the various players. In case of problems it is generally your best option to install the most recent versions of browser and player. In the following cases the Cutter will not function or function only partially. Firefox has more or less the same restrictions as Netscape.
- Windows Media Player and Firefox/Netscape
You cannot automatically retrieve the position in a file: you need to do this by hand. This goes for at least up to and including Media Player version 9 and Firefox/Netscape. For Firefox there are ActiveX plugins that might be able to solve this problem; however, these have not been tested.
- Quicktime and retrieving the current position automatically
Editing Quicktime MOV-files in all Internet Explorer versions and Firefox/Netscape
The position in the mediafile can be automatically retrieved from Quicktime version 6. The buttons 'Play from' do not work. The markers can be entered by hand. The generated HTML code will work.
- Real Player and playlists in Internet Explorer
You cannot play a Real playlist from the playlist edit screen using the 'Play' button. You need to save the playlist on the harddisk first using the button 'Save as...' and then open the file in the Real Player. You can provide the playlist created by the Cutter to third parties through a web page as described. The limitation only applies within the Cutter.
- Kasenna Broadband Player and MediaBase server versions
The Kasenna Broadband Player does not work with all Kasenna Mediabase servers. The supported player is version 4 and later, which only works with MediaBase XMP SE. This is the version installed on SURFmedia.
Retrieving start and end point
Real Player
Kasenna Broadband Player
Please note: versions up to 3.0.2 are not supported, as they work with a different format for start and end time.
- Kasenna Broadband Player and Firefox/Netscape
Kasenna does not provide any plugins for Firefox/Netscape. For this reason the Virtual Cutter cannot support the combination of Broadband Player and Firefox/Netscape. Netscape 4.x is also problematic. You are advised to edit Kasenna files in Internet Explorer. Therefore the generated HTML code for an embedded player does not work either in in Firefox/Netscape 6 and later. Hyperlinks to clips will work, because the Broadband Player is started as a separate application.
- Kasenna Broadband Player and playlists
The playlists for the Kasenna Broadband Player can only be played in Internet Explorer. Such a playlist consists of a complete HTML document in which the clips are played sequentially. As no Firefox and Netscape plugins are provided by Kasenna, the document cannot be viewed in these browsers.
- Editing Windows Media Player in Firefox/Netscape under Windows 95
The player cannot be embedded unless Windows Media Player version 7.1 or later is installed. However, these versions cannot be installed in Windows 95. In other words, the combination of Windows 95, Firefox/Netscape and Windows Media Player does not work for an embedded player, but it does work for the external Media Player. However, the start and end markers can be set manually, and can be checked using the 'Play clip' hyperlink. It is only the embedded player that does not work.
This incompatibility implies that a web page containing the HTML code for an embedded player cannot be viewed either under Windows 95 in Firefox/Netscape.
